Slate senior technology writer Will Oremus wrote a humor piece on the subject, where he quoted OKCupid co-founder Christian Rudder saying: “Guess what, everybody: If you use the Internet, you’re the subject of hundreds of experiments at any given time, on every site. That’s how websites work.”

] is it the norm, do all websites do this experimentation?

] most do experimentation of some sort, all the time, likely that most are NOT of this type, on a personal level

] example testing - A/B testing, ex different headlines - same story, OR changing styles site design, layouts to determine which creates a higher clickthrough rate for visitors

] A/B testing of headlines doesnt affect the relationships people have IRL

] thing is, we dont know which sites are doing or what they are doing

] we have to trust the sites we use

] this is a violation of trust, for some people

] if users dont like it

] you can vote with your feet and go elsewhere,

] BUT is where you go, doing the same thing?

] some services like facebook, which are ubiquitous

] people wont leave, but these types of incidents erode users trust

] could be harming themselves, they rely on the data that users feed into their system to sell ads,

] if users continue to lose trust, its 'possible' that they may feed less of their data into the system

] facebook is realizing it, OK Cupid maybe not so much

] example experiments from humour article - YELP experiment

] switch reviews and ratings from the worst sushi restaurants and best restaurants, see if people then try worst and give it a good rating

] example Yahoo mail - delete all user email

] see how people react to having no emails, are they happier or not?

] example busch could switch beer with fake beer and

] see how people react, do they still act drunk

[38:30] #howdoyouwatchTNT

] police officer watches from his police cruiser, says suspects dont care for the show so much, but he hopes to convert one of them someday

[objects]

]

[systems]

]

[people]

] show - tech news today

] show host - Mike Elgan

] show producer - Jason Howell

] guest host - Elise Hu

[events]

]

[places]

] show - tech news today

] show url - shows home page with video of show and links

] show notes - detailed show notes, transpcript, links to resources

] show notes summary -

] twit chat room -

] subreddit - News item submissions for TWIT's Tech News Today

]
