[TRIP DETAILS]

Location.Destination: Mount McGuire - via NE Ridge

People.Who's going?: BS, OH , DS

People.Who's Driving?: BS

Event.Date: Saturday August 17, 2013

Event.Meet Time: 08:00 am

Location Meet-up: OH

Directions to Meeting Location: (drop location here) from: (drop location here)

Directions to the ___ Trailhead:() from: meetingLocation

[TIMES]

Estimated StartTime: 08:15

Estimated TravelTime to Trailhead: 08:45

Estimated Hiking StartTime: 10:00

Estimated ReturnTime(Trailhead):

Estimated ReturnTime(home):

[STATISTICS]

Trail Distance: x.x KM (return)

Elevation @ Trailhead: 1400m

Elevation @ Summit: 2100m

Elevation Gained: 1000m

[TRAIL.MARKERS]/[VIEWPOINTS]

x] "Trailhead"/Parking Lot - Yes an actual parking lot at the end of this road, complete with (left behind) lawn chairs and coleman stove (functional ? fuel), just in case you brought a can of beans (and campstove fuel) along with you that you wanted to warm up. We parked the 'wounded jeep' about 1 - 2 km shy of this trailhead on wide flat pullout that enabled us to turnaround completely without having to backup.

x] overgrown access to scree feild - this is just a short flat section that gets you to the scree feild where the climb begins. its overgrown, not marked and has a bunch of rotting deadfall in it, so remember to step carefully on those logs cause your foot could go right through.

x] "big scree field" - im guessing this is about 3-400 m up, fairly steep with lots and lots of loose rock. The first half is a little less vertically challenging then the upper half which seems to increase in grade somewhat. What was surprising to me was that so much of the rock was loose, even a handfull of fairly large boulders that i grabbed onto seemed ready to give way. Throw in a fair bit of moss covered rock and IF You ever had to come down this in the rain, well good luck with that!!

x] the trail "enter the trees" - OK so you've get the grunt out of the way. NOPE, this is mcguire, you are just starting. Think kick stepping your feet into the dirt to get traction, grabbing at tiny shrubs and grasses for handhold,

] 2nd trail(blue flag) down to ??? -

] up, up, up -

] roped section -

x] the ridge - this was the best part of the trip today!, it levelled out, opened up There are a few 'sketchy' spots, but manageble. You would want to be really careful up here in the fog or in the dark.

] descent into the bowl - tough too find, its NOT flagged and there are no visible indications of a pathway down into "the bowl". TR from __ ON states also that

] orig trail(SE) to the peak -

] the peak -

[flora fauna]

] bear poop - between where we parked the Jeep and the parking lot, noticed at least 3 big fresh piles, deposited right in the middle of the road.

] pheasant - near the top of the scree feild just off to the left a large bird going about its business.

[myTRIP NOTES]

] the road - pretty reasonable condition, there are some pretty steep sections and there are also several sections where its wide open, great for pictures, but NOT so great if you put a wheel off road

] yahoos - quads, 4x4's, dirt bikes,

] people - other than ourselves there

] feeling - going up was OK,

] sad - the jeep broke - making slow steady progress up the FSR the first thing we noticed was a red warning light for , a puff of smoke, burning smell, then no reverse

] cell tower - depending on where you are on this trail, your likely to be getting some cell reception. There is a cell tower located on mcguire. Of course you dont want to count on that b/c

] turnaround - give that we were ] not sure on the path into the bowl, ] not sure about the return trip to chwk given the status of the injured jeep and that it was ] pretty darn cloudy all day with only a few periodic breaks of sunshine and ] feeling the effects of scalling the roman wall ] not sure about going down the roman wall

[other peoples TRIP REPORTS on this hike]

Read about what others are saying about this hike in the following trip reports ....

] 2013-07-22 - "greatwhitenorth" made it to the peak

] The trail is fairly well marked/traveled up and onto the ridge, and once you get up there things opened up nicely.

] I couldn't really see a nice spot to head down the other side of the ridge into the bowl, so I just picked a spot and started making my way across.

] Tried to stay as high as possible through the bowl, but snow and scree made it a little difficult to traverse.

] 2013-06-16 - chwkhiker - made it to the peak, on his 3rd attempt via a slightly different approach (?nw ridge?)

] taking the center branch of the FSR (instead of the left branch)

*] nice photos

] 2013-06-05 - kellylegros - an 'after work' hike, group of 12, hiked up to "the ridge" in the snow

] photos of some climbing the "roman wall" gives you a good indication of the pitch of this

] 2009-08-30 flowing brook - another NE ridge approach ( across 3 rockslides vs descent into bowl )

] photos - goats on mcguire

] 2009 elkaholic report -

[or some other HIKING DESTINATIONS ...]

] [Sumas mountain]

] [Vedder Mountain - West]

[REFERENCE]

STATISTICS - Mount McGuire (NE Ridge Route)

TRIP REPORTS - Mount McGuire July 22 2013
