Sure it's easy to measure our economic situation against the 500 pound gorilla next door, but what's the point? If we adjust our perspectives to a weighted basket of currencies we will be able to take a more balanced/global approach. We need to look globally.

We need leadership who is going to be nice to everyone, yet able to engineer positive outcomes for Canadians at what ever cost. We need to develop and exploit unfair competitive advantages, and be unapologetic about it.

] i.e. significantly more withholding tax on foreign ownership sales of houses.

] growing/exporting cannabis,

] better digital infra,

] We could be setting up blockchain based commodity exchanges. ] We could be leaders in banking/finance transparency. The technology is open we could take a note from IEX's key strategy and chase out HFTs by making it impossible to game our financial systems.

] Power costs need to be fixed asap. These rates are a non-starters for power hungry businesses. What does Wynne expect me to do? Rub sticks together and try and sell them on Queen st.? Everything from the knowledge economy to auto part stamping needs power. Spend the cash, fix the infra... Make electricity cheap as chips, green? sure! but don't fuck me around on prices ever again.

] We need to take Bell and Rogers and fuck them up well and good. These monopolies are stiflingly bad. We could be laying fiber as part of the stimulus strategy. We could invest in strategic data centres for cloud storage.

] For me, my dream is a no bullshit PSP like stripe but for Canada. If you are a Canadian business and you need a payment gateway it takes weeks of running around to get the paperwork sorted. In the US: 3 days. That's a problem. There are so many things like that which must be fixed immediately.

] We need to create spaces where startups of all kinds can get started as cheap as possible

] EDIT: We should be scrambling to bring every single entrepreneur into this country. Not unskilled TFWs, but rather people who know and want to run a business. That means making the incorporation process simple, and straightforward. Most importantly: The taxation needs to be easy and not burdensome.

] EDIT: We need to encourage a culture of entrepreneurs, where it's ok to take a risk and fail. Where there are communities and hotbeds of activity that aren't necessarily located in Toronto. I would pack up my car tomorrow and move to the far north of Sask. if it meant I would be respected for trying to start a business.

] EDIT: We should seriously consider a proactive solution to get out ahead of the pending brain-drain. It's likely that it's starting already, but we need to get in front of that and that should be priority number one. There needs to be something (I don't know what) that makes young STEM grads believe they'd be out of their minds to leave this country and go elsewhere.

> by u/

] And the opening of more and larger greenhouses start to make economic sense

] alta economic plan

- there building a pipeline from Ft. Mac to Edmonton (shouldn't be any/too much opposition in your own backyard) right. The oil companies are going to pay for this, b/c if all goes well its the "first leg" of any possible future South/East pipelines

- The plan is to build cars - get this - electric cars and then sell them globally. Were not talking $ 100k+ Tesla's here, were talking a basic 25k sedan and a basic 25k pickup truck that most anyone can afford.

- They are offering ANY mfg company who is in the Edmonton/Calgary corridor FREE energy &/OR oil credits towards the production of any of the required EV components.

- Maybe, even FREE energy to any NEW company for a given period of time to attract new industry ( perhaps we can move some of those bitcoins mines out of China)

- You think the shops that build and service drilling rigs/oil sands equipment can't turn out hiqh quality fenders, doors, batteries, etc - think again - they are ingenious.

- The carbon tax credits gained from the exports of the EV's are going to offset the ones that they will need to make the Ft Mac oil sands viable when/if the price of oil returns to profitable levels. If oil doesn't return - well - carbon tax credits are going to be worth something, right?

] g.qry = canada+economic+diversification

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/is-economic-diversification-the-answer-to-alberta-s-financial-woes-1.2973538

- YES

- NO - hasnt worked previously, -gov should bal budget at $50 oil, save excess
