<h2>[WHAT] what is a web developer?</h2>
<ol>
<li>]&nbsp; a web developer is someone who creates web pages.</li>
<ol>
<li>] Back in the day,&nbsp;a web developer (sometimes referred to as a web master) was someone who developed (aka created/produced)&nbsp;web pages and/or web sites ( collections of related web pages)</li>
<li>] Fast forward to today - where a web developer (almost NEVER referred to as a web master) is someone who develops (aka creates/produces) web pages and/or web sites and/or web applications, and/or web services,</li>
<li>] Today we also have many different TYPES&nbsp;OF WEB DEVELOPERS front end developer, back end developers, full stack developer, UX developers, UI developers,&nbsp;&nbsp;designers,&nbsp;.net developers, php developers, rails developers, ....&nbsp;</li>
<li>] Sometimes web developers may also be leaned upon for related web work, - deployment, troubleshooting, support, SEO? social media, marketing, ....</li>
</ol></ol>
<h2>[WHY] do you want to be a web developer?</h2>
<ol>
<li>] $ $ $</li>
<ol>
<li>] yes you can make money, even&nbsp;<a href="https://d1avok0lzls2w.cloudfront.net/uploads/blog/52f9bd07b942f2.35292293.jpg" target="_blank">good</a><a href="https://d1avok0lzls2w.cloudfront.net/uploads/blog/52f9bd07b942f2.35292293.jpg" target="_blank">&nbsp;money</a>&nbsp;and perhaps, with some good ideas and some good fortune,even&nbsp;<a href="http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MarkZuckerberg.jpg" target="_blank">mega&nbsp;money</a>, BUT&nbsp;</li>
<li>&gt; ] it is a very competitive field, IF you are doing this solely for the money to be made, you might want to take a real, close up and personal, long and hard look at the work involved before you jump into the field. If you dont have at least a strong like for the work, you could be in for a heap of dissapointment and frustration.</li>
</ol>
<li>] i like working on computers -</li>
<ol>
<li>] yeah me too, but lets remember what is WORKING and what is PLAYING on computers - browsing reddit(OR fb OR ...), snapchatting, mastering the Clash of Clans IS NOT cs or programming or even working on computers,&nbsp;it is playing on computers, or using a computer, which is an entirely different construct than working on a computer.</li>

<li>] &lt;-- THIS - back in the day, i remember starting out with doing "mouseover" effects on element, creating drag and drop, connecting to a database.&nbsp;Today most of that stuff is easily handled with the many layers of abstraction that have been added to our web&nbsp;development stacks&nbsp;or with improved standards. &nbsp;( 3D gl )</li>

<h2>[WHY NOT] some things you should know, before you start ...</h2>
<ol>
<li>] the only CONSTANT is change</li>
<ol>
<li>] the way that we build web pages today, is not exactly the same as the way that we built web pages yesterday.&nbsp;</li>
</ol>
<li>] too much information(TMI),&nbsp;</li>
<ol>
<li>] its a busy time for this industry, there is a&nbsp;heaps of new tools, languages, frameworks, services, packages, components, libraries, etc&nbsp;that have been released recently&nbsp;or are in development today, with another&nbsp;heap on the way tommorow. Which&nbsp;of these&nbsp;technologies do you choose, why,&nbsp;how long does it take you to learn that technology, how long to master it? How long will the&nbsp;technologies you choose&nbsp;last?. These are tough questions to answer, even for someone&nbsp;with years of experience, answering these&nbsp;questions correctly for someone who is new could be nigh impossible.</li>
</ol>
<li>]&nbsp;I can't keep up(ICKU)</li>
<ol>
<li>] given all of the above,&nbsp;</li>
</ol>
<li>] there will be 'grunt work' and there will be 'stuff you hate' doing -</li>
<ol>
<li>] hey its NOT like shovelling meter deep snow off 200m of sidewalk on a -25 degree ontario winter day,&nbsp;NOT even close to that BUT there is going to be plenty of boring, repititve, jobs, like writing ....</li>
<li>] tests -</li>
<ol>
<li>] i&nbsp;HATE writing tests, i&nbsp;LOVE having tests, but I HATE writing tests, &nbsp;did i mention that I hate ...</li>
</ol>
<li>] documentation -</li>
<ol>
<li>] see above - ditto</li>
</ol>
<li>] cleaning up somebody elses 'mess'</li>
<ol>
<li>]</li>
<li>*] SIDE NOTE - well 'documented' code with good 'tests' goes a long way to avoiding messes</li>
</ol></ol>
<li>] there will be decisions, decisions, decisions</li>
<ol>
<li>] what type of web developer do you want to be -&nbsp;</li>
<li>] linux or windows or ???, ruby or ???,</li>
<li>]&nbsp;</li>

<li>] you would think that, BUT the reality is that a surprisingly low percentage of tech jobs are REMOTE ONLY&nbsp;or offer REMOTE WORK as an option.</li>
