<p>The effects of the oil price crash will not be confined to Alberta.&nbsp;<a href="http://worthwhile.typepad.com/worthwhile_canadian_initi/2012/06/blame-alberta.html" target="_blank">Stephen Gordon notes</a>&nbsp;that the oil boom drove up wages elsewhere in Canada as well.</p>
<p>What can the federal and provincial governments do to offset rising unemployment in Alberta?</p>
<ul>
<li>Keep interest rates low.</li>
<li>If there's any infrastructure that needs to get built, now would be a good time.</li>
<li>Encourage employers to consider relocating to the province (in Vancouver, where real estate costs are sky-high, Calgary may be attractive).</li>
<li>Anticipate increased demand for post-secondary education and retraining.</li>
<li>Look at any factors preventing people from relocating.</li>
<li>Scale back the Temporary Foreign Worker program as unemployment rises.</li>

<div>I actually cant stand the negative tone these articles have.</div>
<div>Oil is a means to an end, not the end itself. The world wants cheap energy, in whatever forms it comes, to power and fuel useful human work. The idea that we want high energy prices because some segment of Canadian workers are involved in its extraction is just ridiculous.</div>
<div>An advanced economy like ours relying on base resource extraction is a bad thing - bordering on pathetic. Now that our dollar has dropped and the federal government is no longer obsessed with oil, maybe we'll see a transition to something that makes sense, even if the disruption causes some temporary hardship.</div>
