The Northern Gateway pipeline project

yes or no?

[WHAT]

  1. ] the Northern Gateway pipeline (NG) is a proposed pipeline project to be built by Canadian company Enbridge.
  2. ] The pipeline will carry diluted bitumen(dilbit) from the alberta oilsands development (tarsands) in northern alberta across the canadian rockies to a port near kitimat in northern BC. The dilbit will then be loaded into super oil tankers and exported to China.
  3. ] the question asked in the globe and mail article was are you for or against the northern gateway pipeline?
  4. *] there are approx 500 comments on this story on the globes website, i read through approx. 5 pages worth
    1. IMO some of the ones most worthy of reading are as follows
  5.

[YES - here is WHY i DO support the Northern Gateway pipeline project]

  1. [economic-benefits] jobs, jobs, jobs
    1. ] there "may" be jobs constructing the pipeline
    2. ] there will be jobs operating the pipeline -  approx 103 permanent FT jobs according to enbridge
    3. ] there "could" be a lot more jobs IF/when they have a spill,
    4. http://www.northerngateway.ca/economic-opportunity/benefits-for-canadians/
  2. [economic-benefits] revenues, royalties, profits
    1. ] royalties for BC -  according to the enbridge website the province of BC isestimated to recieve $ 1.2 billion over  the next 30 years -
      1. thats approx $10 per person per year for each person in the province,
    2. ] royalties - for AB, est  0.5 billion over 30 years
    3. ] comment on how the oil currently being piped into the us market is sold at a discounted rate (captive customer) and oil sold overseas could be sold for more.
  3. [track-record]
    1. ] richard 1214 ] notes that we have the Transmountain pipeline running into the southern BC, delivering 350k barrels per day into Vancouver. It was built in 1953(to the standards of that time) and has been operational since then without any major spills.

[NO - here is WHY I DO NOT support the Northern Gateway pipeline]

  1. [economic-benefits] jobs, jobs, jobs
    1. ] YES there will definetly be economic benefits. You need to WEIGH those against the risks that you are taking to create those jobs. Are the projected 103 permanent FT jobs worth that risk?
  2. [economic-benefits] revenues, royalties and profits
    1. ] BC - Is the $10 a person every year royalty money worth it?
    2. ] AB - Is the
  3. [economic-risks]
    1. 1voice ] cleanup cost of dilbit($29,000) barrel vs cleanup cost of crude ($2000) barrel
    2. ] ? the cleanup costs? BP has taken a $ 37.8 Billion charge on its books to cover potential costs related to their spill, estimates are that it could potentially increase further up to 65 Billion
  4. [environmental-impact-construction]
    1. ]
  5. [environmental-impact-potential-spill]
    1. ] Philosopher King ] comments that the WWF says the "great bear" forest is one of the last untouched ecosystems, a spill would be catostrophic to the ecosystem for generations to come
    2. danb77 ] on the treacherousness of the waters, and extreme conditions going into the kitimat port,
    3. ] ? spill stats , ] likelihood of spill
  6. [track-record]
    1. ] it took 17 hours for enbridge to respond to a leaking pipeline, in a heavily populated, easily accessible location in michigan
    2. ] how long will it take for them to respond to a leaking pipeline in a remote location where access is difficult (and expensive) and no one is watching?
    3. ] this was THEIR PIPELINE that THEY KNEW, for YEARS IN ADVANCE, NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED
    1. ] BUT - THEY CHOSE - NOT to REPAIR it
  7. [efficency]
    1. Mark_BC ] makes some interesting comments on the amout of oil, the amount of recoverable oil and the energy cost of recovering that oil - bottom line is that we are not as "awash in oil" as some politicians would have you believe
    2. ] luis rielin reply to mark b - very funny retort on how some politicians seem to portray the situation
  8. [democracy]
    1. ] macur ] comments on how 1 man, can make a decision that affects the nation, possibly for generations to come

  1. g+ POST
    1. > NO,
    2. > I am working my own "RISKS vs REWARDS ANALYSIS" ( sospep.com/view/article?id=## ) and I am coming to the conclusion that the risks definetly outweigh the rewards for me as resident of the province of BC. Maybe i've got it all wrong or missed something substantial and if i have, please feel free to update my analysis.
    3. > Lets remove the political rhetoric( 3 jobs for every man, woman and child, royalty cheques raining from the sky and streams flowing with diluted bitumen) from the conversation and take a  closer look a the cold hard facts, of how many jobs, where, when, for how long, how much royalty, etc ... tally the NET economic benefits and then weigh that against the potential economic risks that we are taking to generate these dollars.
    4. > We may also want to consider that collectivly as a nation, we may want to conserve and preserve a valuable finite natural resource for our own long term usage, rather than to sell it off as quickly as possible to the highest bidder at the time.
