[WHAT]

  1. OneDrive - is microsofts online/cloud based file storage service. OneDrive services now are integrated with the windows 8 operating systems.The current data storage limit on this service that microsoft includes for FREE is 7 GB. microsoft provides PAID OPTIONS to upgrade your storage limit via annual subscription.  Usage of the service is entirely optional. There are many alternative online storage services available.
    1. OPINION PROS - integrated with the operating system, nothing additional to install*, provides FREE ONLINE(cloud) storage for up to 7 GB worth of your data, your account is already setup and ready to go. Provides access to FREE online versions of microsoft word and excel.
    2. OPINION CONS - its NOT integrated all that well.
  2. OneDrive - 3 slightly different flavors, here's why it might be a little cloudy(pun intended). If your new to the skydrive services it important to know that there is basically 3 different ways you can work with the service. They are as follows ... 
    1. native windows 8 OneDrive - APP - which is pre-installed and ready to go. You will see the Tile on the start screen. Similar to using a browser to access a website, you can upload files from your computer to the skydriver service. The SkyDrive app then displays the files you have uploaded, you can then choose which files you want to work with. You can also create and delete folders to organize your files.
    2. * OPTIONALLY you can install the OneDrive - PROGRAM to integrate the "OneDrive Service" with your DESKTOP PROGRAMS and the windows file explorer program
      1. ] The free program from microsoft displays the "OneDrive" service as a "drive" on your computers file system.
      2. ] You can now drag and drop files to this drive just like you would with any other drive to save the files to your OneDrive folder, OR
      3. ] choose the OneDrive Drive and folder location  when you use the "file save" dialog when you are saving documents. the skydrive program takes care of the rest. Using this method you can UPLOAD files of a LARGER SIZE then the maximum 2 GB file size limit in the native app. 
    3. access your ONEDRIVE via your WEB BROWSER,  most any web browser, on any pc or tablet and even on your smartphone 
      1. ] just go to http://live.com and login using the same microsoft account you use to login to your pc. 
  3. OneDrive - other items of note ...
    1. NOTE: if you previously had a windows live account, you already have a skydrive account. Depending on when you signed up for your account your FREE storage limit may be signifigantly higher ( 25 GB )
    2. NOTE: windows phone owner's also get a certain extra amount of skydrive storage with their phone purchase ....
    3. NOTE: that the new version of ms office(office 2013) will also adopt the skydrive integration features. The default settings in office will be for it to save documents to your skydrive folder versus using your PC's documents folder.
    4. PAID OPTIONS FOR STORAGE UPGRADE - currently its like $10/25/50 per year for an additional 20/50/100 GB,

    1. if you have a skydrive/live account you have access to the microsoft office's online versions of WORD and EXCEL for FREE.
  5. OneDrive ALTERNATIVES  - the following are some common alternatives for cloud based storage services
    1. box.com - has ms windows client app,
    2. dropbox.com - has ms windows client app,
    3. google.drive - additionally OFFERS office type suite of productivity applications for creating WORD, EXCEL and PRESENTATION files.

    2. ] android or ipad tablets
    3. ] other pcs and macs
    4. ] and of course all your windows PC , tablet and smartphone devices
  2. ] do i have to install the OneDrive desktop?
    1. ] The OPTIONAL installation of the OneDrive DESKTOP program provides OneDrive services to the PROGRAMS in the the desktop environment. After installing you will have a OneDrive Drive letter showing in your File Explorer. The file size limit is much larger for the desktop program version ( vs ) and you can take advantage of automatic synchronization features.

  2. ] any device - android phone, iphone, tablets all have apps to access your skydrive.
  3. ] microsoft live account holders - anyone can sign up for a FREE microsoft live account and get access to the "skydrive" cloud based storage services offered by microsoft as well as to the FREE online versions of microsoft word and excel.
  4. ] EACH of the above interfaces is somewhat different and offers somewhat different functionality
    1. ] skydrive thru browser IF you want to use
      1. LOOK HERE for ms office WORD and EXCEL ONLINE VERSIONS 
    2. ] skydrive.APP if you want to
      1. DONT LOOK HERE for the ms word and excel versions, they are not available
    3. ] skydrive.PROGRAM if you want to ..
      1. drag and drop files from your PC to the skydrive drive on your pc
      2. larger file size (if needed)
