I am working on putting together a chart where i can quickly see which of the top 100(+) MAJOR apps are AVAILABLE and which apps are NOT AVAILABLE for each of the mobile Operating System(OS) platforms.
Additionally, where there is no FIRST PARTY app available for a particular platform, i would also like to quickly see the top ranked THIRD PARTY app(s) that are available.

In the case of the Android and iOS platforms, pretty much every major app is available on each of those platforms.
In the case of the Blackberry 10.x OS and the Windows 8.x mobile phone platforms that picture is not quite as cut and dried.
In Blackberry's case in particular, the app waters are a bit murkier, so to speak.
Now I know that Blackberry 10.x can run Android apps and that "hypothetically speaking" almost any Android app, that doesn't rely on Google Play services should run on your Blackberry 10.x device, the *problem* is that I don't know which Android apps rely on google play services, it would be nice to quickly see that without having to go through the bother of installing the app only to find out its not going to work because of that.
Another *problem* that the chart attempts to address, is that while we can run android apps, I expect that many would prefer to run a Blackberry app. There are still many cases where first party Blackberry apps are NOT available BUT credible, functionally equivalent third party apps are available. The chart denotes these apps with a yellow square and points users to the alternative app or apps that are available
Here is a breakdown what the chart currently shows ...
A LIST - of approximately the top 100+ of the major mainstream smartphone apps. The source of the list began with a similar list published in 2013 and is currently being evolved to reflect as accurately as possible what constitutes the most popular apps that people use on their smartphones and the availablity of those apps across many of the different smartphone mobile Operating System platforms. Any apps that are listed with their app name in bold have an installed user base of 100 Million users +.
*> A GREEN square* - is used to distinguish which of the *major apps that are "First party - Built for Blackbery"* apps and as such can take advantage Blackberry 10 Features like the Priority Hub and Active Frames. A "First Party app" is one that has been developed by the original developer of the app for the platform(ex Facebook by Facebook)
*> A DARK GREEN square* - indicates what I will call a *"Second Party - Built for Blackberry" apps*. These are popular major apps that were not developed by the original app developer but were either built by the OEM(Blackberry, Microsoft, ... ) or directly contracted by the OEM.
*> A YELLOW square* - Indicates that their is a *"go to" Third Party alternative app* (aka functionally equivalent) listed, for example, if I don't have a first party "Readability" app, I can quickly see that "eRBook" is a built for Blackberry app that according to many of its users, offers up a comparable experience. We don't have "Pandora" but many are using "Apollo" to use that service, no SnapChat but Snap2Chat is taking up the slack, ....
*> A RED square* - In the case of apps that are simply *NOT AVAILABLE or that are NOT going to work*, that big red X would save me the time of even bothering to search out, download, install and them spend more time trying to get that app to work.
This chart is based upon a similar chart published by Nick Landry at Infragistics. He compiled his version to illustrate the availablity of apps on the windows 8.x platforms relative to the other mobile platforms. Unfortunately for Blackberry users Nick didn't bother to include the Blackberry OS in the comparison :(
The chart and the list of MAJOR apps both still need some work. The list of apps is a "US centric" list and seems to have a heavy concentration of news/media reader apps. I think a further review of the "major apps" across a wider section of markets may broaden the scope of app types.
I have added a category section to the chart to group apps with similar functionality. Adding additional categories for "new" and "trending" apps might be interesting for tracking some of the upcoming apps that may make the "major apps" list one day.
The app list was also compiled in 2013 and is a bit out of date, although the *major apps* haven't changed all that much. I have added some of the of big names that have risen in popularity during that time.
And I have (mostly) left out any ANY games for the time being.
