REVIEW - windows weekly

episode # 366

[subjects-summary]

  1. [00:00] smalltalk
    1. "]
  2. [00:00] xbox one - news from the e3 gaming conference this week
    1. ] no talk about "Kinect", barely mentioned
    2. ] xbox 1 - msft talked about it as being a "gaming console" and NOT an "entertainment console" which is what they called it last year
    3. ] sony - talked about the ps4 as being an "entertainment console" and NOT a "gaming console", weird reversal
    4. ] msft has listened to customers and released a version of the xbox without connect, because it is what customers wanted and this version sells at the same price as the PS4
    5. ] msft has setup a website for actively soliciting customer/user feedback, to guide the direction of the product
    6. ] are they stepping out of their 'ivory tower'?
    7. ] you can get 10% performance improvement on your xbox 1, if you dont have Kinect or you disable Kinect
    8. ] xbox gaming performance does not feel slow but navigating to the game sometimes does
    9. ] xbox app "Brazil", realtime scoring updates on second screen for wordl cup soccer matches
    10. ] new xbox feature adds twitter integration panel, - see tweets about 'event' ex brazil while you are watching
    11. "] PT - I will never use this features, if i watch the Game of Thrones or basketball, I only want to do that,
    12.  ] MSFT press conference @ e3 they announced their LIST exclusive games - including sunset overdrive, wars of horizon 2, fantasia, project spark, halo master chief collection (previous halo games in 1080p), grand central spotlight,
    13. ] halo5 - coming next year,
    14. ] http://windowsitpro.com/paul-thurrotts-wininfo/microsoft-and-sony-reverse-messaging-e3-2014
  3. [24:00] "windows 8.1 - update 1" - mandatory deadline to install is June 11,2014
    1. ] great update, no reasons not to update
    2. "] PT - it amazes me, people complain about everything, ex in modern full screen apps, when you mouseover the top of the screen, a windows title bar appears, (easier way to close or minimize the app), it drives people insane,
    3. ] this update appears as a "windows update"
    4. ] if you don't upgrade, no more patches/fixes for your windows OS
    5. [BUT IF]
    6. ] if user is through work/business, businesses have 2 additional months to upgrade, until aug.12
    7. ] if user is consumer and still on windows 8.0 and has never upgraded to windows 8.1, you then have until 2016 to upgrade to 8.1
    8. ] ? = why isn't upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 required  - something to do /w support lifecycle - for businesses, bound to support it for set period of time,
    9. ] 8.0 -> 8.1 delivered via the store
    10. ] 8.1 update 1 - delivered via 'windows update'
    11. ] 9.0 delivered via ????, disks
    12. ] if you didnt upgrade, you can still updgrade after the date(June 11),
    13. ] http://winsupersite.com/windows-8/update-1-becomes-mandatory-windows-81-today
    14. ] http://www.zdnet.com/windows-8-1-consumers-its-time-to-move-to-update-1-7000030378/
  4. [34:00] "windows 8.1 - update 1" - OneDrive changes
    1. "] PT - changes - OneDrive app - upgraded significantly, seems to work more like the windows 7 version, same sort of options when you click and right click
    2. ] but also works like the 'settings' part of the modern app, think this is to appease, the "i never want to use a modern environment" crowd
    3. ] option to pause synching, more granular, right click options went from 2 to about 8-10,
    4. ] not exactly the same as win7, but some nice changes
  5. [36:00] win 8. 1 - and beyond - future updates, threshold speculation
    1. "] MJF  we keep calling it update 1, the official name is 'update'
    2. ] another update is expected in 2014 aka - update 2, probably in august, then 9.0 (aka threshold) in 2015-04
    3. ] some rumours floating about an 'update 3', but i am hearing "no"
    4. ] threshold goal is to respond to feedback, concerns, rename it,
    5. ] desktop users have made their voices heard,
    6. ] flipside they are people who like the modern interface
    7. "] LL - i have to admit and i hate to do it, i am getting used to win 8 and I feel comfortable with it and its good they are going to change it
    8. ] if you are using it on touch, its not going to change,
    9. ] there are still inconsistencies,  ex right click on start screen on 'desktop' get a context menu VS on 'touch' get an app menu bar, 2 different responses, inconsistent
    10. ] they are working on these types of things, it takes some time,
    11. ] GOAL win 9 - depending on your hw, win should work the  way you expect it to work
    12. ] they are not doing away with 'metro interface' or the 'start screen'
    13. ] you will see the return of the start menu but it wont be the same as the start menu of windows 7
    14. ] 1 PRB with 8.0 release - the mobile first, touch first approach, when the hw available at the time, wasn't available
    15. ] LL - still annoying - touch here, swipe here prompts, to help users, when on non-touch hw, there is a setting to turn them off,
    16. ] julie larsen green's - 'crazy admission' - after x days of usage, 70% of our users have figured out how to access the charms menu, strande
    17. "] PT - mistakes were made
    18. "] MJF - mistakes are being fixed
    19. "] PT - i thinks it going to be all good news, i really do
  6. [46:00] surface pro 3 - has NEW ad
    1. ] ad content is better than then the previous surface 'clicking' + 'dancing' ads
    2. *] youtube  version, low quality video, possibly pulled,
    3. ] it shows off the capablities of the device, a tablet with the full capablities of a PC, you can use it with a keyboard, you can use it with a pen, you can use office on it, you can use it with USB devices
    4. ] BUT some of the 'fine print' is a bit troubling - the keyboard doesnt come with it, is an extra $ 130+, msft office is extra $,
    5. ] confusing marketing strategy - the cheapest devices have free office software, while the most expensive devices, you have to buy the software extra
    6. ] speculating that maybe the touch first (gemini) versions of office may be included with surface devices
    7. ] can use the 'online versions' of office for free.
    8. ] http://winsupersite.com/mobile-devices/first-surface-pro-3-ad-appears
  7. [51:00] surface - firmware updates, rolled out this week
    1. ] only certain models patched, surface 2 and surface pro 2,
    2. ] contains fixes for power and battery life issues in connection with the covers
    3. ] still some issues with getting the surface pro updates, reports from some outside of the US
    4. ] the firmware updates are supposed to come through automatically
    5. ] first haswell based device that has "connected standby

    1. ] has NOT rolled out by any carriers yet,
    2. ] BUT - it is "available" to anyone, through msft, by registering as a developer
    3. ] although the update is named as 'developer preview' version, it is RTM code
    4. ] it will be out, in a couple of weeks to carriers, dependant upon carrier and device model
    5. ] next update will be windows phone 8.1 update 1
    6. ] PRB - with xbox music, the first launch gets a blank black screen, then a  second launch of the APP and the APP works ok
    7. ] carrier update willl be RTM code (released 2014-04), + updates since (april) + firmware updates for device

      1. ] you have wait for 8.1 to be rolled out b4 will see that
    3. *] there is some licening deal where developers can offer 1 licence that's good for both phone and pc, (but thats not the same as universal app)
    4. ] social network integration, undoing the 'hub model',
      1. ] only certain social networks (fb, twitter) were included, but many others were not ...
    5. "] PT - explains WHY they are backtracking on the social integration features
      1. ] when msft launched win phone they wanted this social network integration features as a differentiating feature
      2. ] theory - go to the messaging app and send message across various messaging apps, go to the people app and post things to multiple networks (fb, g+, twitter) ...
      3. ] problem in use - while the integration is nice, BUT it doesn't keep up with development on apps/services, ex could check into fb but you could'nt check other people into fb,
      4. "] PT - i reverted to using the individual Apps instead of using the social features integrated into People app,
      5. ] becoming even further outdated over time, b/c of carrier limitation on os updates
      6. ] new 'social framework' - app will use a 'share contract' similar to win 8.x os , the prb with this is its slow, currently
      7. ] up to the app developers to make the integration features work - better than waiting for carriers to push os updates
