] la county was in process of moving all depts to 'on prem' exchange mail servers, a 3 year program across 32 departments
] they then tried/tested 'office 365' in a couple of(2) of their locations, they halted the deployment and tried/tested it
] they then decided to switched to all county offices to office 365,
] they were able to do a direct side by side comparison of office 365 cloud apps VS local (on prem) installed app, they found that office 365 was more convenient, less expensive and more featured then on prem app installs
] they removed their 'on prem' exchange servers that they had already installed and went to an all office 365 cloud services infrastructure
] RB - personal experience with Office 365 migration services was excellent, migration is a big headache, if you do it wrong, your dead

] office 365 runs in msft data centers,
] have said publicly, multiple times, that the plan is to put it on azure
] they can then share the same billing services, directory services, ...
] msft will keep offering new versions of exchange, sharepoint and linq coming to market next year for on prem usage, BUT we dont know how much longer into the future that this will continue
] the on prem versions are NOT the focus and will NOT be as 'feature complete' as the cloud versions of the apps
] development emphasis is on the cloud

] "open" a book by rob canyon - the compaq story, Rob was 1/3 co founders, "]PT - thought i understood what compaq did and why they were relevant, they created the PC compatible industry by reverse engineering the IBM PC bios in a clean room, there was a lot more to it though, msft made custom versions of dos for different companies, versions were incompatible with each other, compaq fixed it, so that all versions would be compatible, they then licenced it back to msft.
