    9. ] developers may be the most unhappy, took a lot of risks developing for win platform over iOS/android
    10. ] what about a single hardware device that could run android and windows phone
    11. ] is msft in hardware for the long term? hardware margins are lower then software,
    12. ] maybe an android runtime on windows
    13. ] msft past experiences with creating their own versions of stuff, aka java, have not worked out well for them, putting your fate in googles hands when google is your competitor not so smart
    14. '] PT - if msft shipped an android phone with nokia unibody chassis and pureview camera, windows phone would be dead, you would be crazy to get a windows phone version

    1. ] another evleaks rumour says that surface mini production has restarted and that it will be available this summer
    2. "] mjf - says she is 99.9 % sure that this rumour is wrong
    3. ] one of the reasons it was delayed at the time, gemini (touch first 'office' for the windows platform) was not ready, it is still not ready
    4. ] the mini was the focus of the spring launch event (when the surface pro 3 was announced), the mini was cancelled at the last minute,
    5. ] it will probably ship next year
    6. ] units that are currently built will likely be used for parts OR ...
    7. "] PT - sad reality for msft that whatever they do, they can never win
    8. ] mini tablet craze has kind of died down already as shipments are dropping, phablets are impacting their numbers
    9. "] MJ F - device could be successfull, if positioned and marketed successfully, ex like the 'courier', a device specific to note taking

    2. ] mainstream support = FREE feature patches, product updates, security fixes/patches, usually for first 5 years from product launch
    3. ] extended support = FREE security fixes/patches, for the next 5 years
    4. ] end of life = no longer supported, no more updates
    5. ] main product affected currently, end of mainstream support for windows 7, January 13,2014
    6. ] for the next 5 years, you still get FREE security updates, ] aka you can still use windows 7 securely, for another 5 years
    7. ] after my post, many stories were posted with clickbait headlines, ] "MSFT killing windows 7", "win 7 is dead", ....
    8. ] people were freaking out, not reading the article, following clickbait headlines,
    9. *] keep calm and read the article, see line 6
    10. ] other products with support deadlines on jan 2015 -  windows server 2008, window server 2008r2, dynamics nav 2009, nav 2009r2
    11. ] windows server 2003 - all support ends, aka End of Life ON July 14,2015
    12. ] also "microsoft office 2010 sp1", support ends completely this October dd,2014, you can upgrade to the next service pack(sp2) to get continued support
    13. ] and "windows phone 7.8", mainstream support ends 2014-09, you still have "extended support" for 5 more years,
    14. ] PT - most people replace their phones every 2 years,
    15. ] perspective - does apple support the first iphone? (NO), it was released 7 years ago

    1. ] they are good changes, once you figure out what's happening
    2. ] msft announced in a blog post published late today that changes are coming
    3. ] today there are 3 versions, ] office 365 small business, ] office 365 small business premium and ] office 365 mid size business
    4. "] PT - i love office 365, i think it is a great product, its a no brainer for families on the consumer side, close to being a no brainer for small businesses on the business side BUT,
    5. ] but too much of it, too many versions, skus, services features you can tack on - people are getting confused
    6. ] just wrote an article called "office 365 primer" explaining how it worked, get so many questions from people who just dont understand, soon their offerings are changing
    7. ] three new versions are ] office 365 business essentials, ] business and ] business premium
    8. ] in fall they are changing their offerings, they dont do a very good of explaining it, its kind of a convaluted thing
    9. ] ex, if you have 'this' now, it will become 'this' when you upgrade
    10. ] one of the new versions they are describing, is a new version of "office 365 pro plus"
    11. ] current subscribers to small bus and small bus. premium, can move forward pretty seamlessly to new plans
    12. ] you will pay no more, you will get some new services
    13. ] if you are on the mid-size business plan, they are significant savings to be had
    14. "] MJ F - the quick way to think about the 3 plans
    15. ] office 365 for business - software priced as a subscription, you can install the software on up to 5 pc's 
    16. ] office 365 essentials - no software, only services, exchange online, lync online, sharepoint online
    17. ] business premium - is both of the above, the software and the services
    18. ] the way that they plan to roll it out is super complicated, the short version is ....

    20. ] msft advising people to wait until your current subscription plan expires before upgrading to new plans
    21. ] sweetening the pot by increasing seat cap on sw licences from 25 to 300
    22. ] people who are paying more(mid size bus plan), will be reimbursed retroactively, to 2014-10

    25. ] the end result is ridiculously confusing collection of offerings

    5. ] msft may directly sell and support
    6. ] private cloud - you control it, on your prem, integrates with cloud,
    7. ] another way to get large shops, moving to cloud, lead in, still have data on prem, uses Azure cloud management tools,

    1. ] msft plan WAS to protect internet users from malware, hackers, spammers
    2. ] convinced judge to turnover IP addresses from dynamic domain hosting service, noip.com
    3. ] users within those domains included 2 notorious blackhat hackers who msft claimed had used their domains to distribute malware
    4. ] noip had not done enough to protect users, and msft plan was ...
    5. ] route all noip traffic through their azure service, Then FILTER out any "bad" traffic and let the good traffic continue on through
    6. ] after msft took control of the domains, Azure died, couldnt handle the volume of traffic
    7. ] the filtering also didnt work out as planned, hadnt expected 'good' traffic and 'bad' traffic coming from the same domain
    8. ] after a few days, msft conceded and handed domains back to noip.com
    9. ] why couldnt azure handle the traffic? don't know
    10. ] an example of best intentions gone awry!
