blackberry 10.x - mobile operating system(o/s)

[WHAT]

  1. Blackberry 10 (BB10) is a NEW(2013-01-31) mobile operating system(o/s) that is targeted to be used on the NEW blackerry 10 series of smartphones as well as on tablets produced by Blackberry(BBRY), formerly operating as Research In Motion(RIMM).
  2. BB10 o/s is based on the qnx realtime os neutrino and made its initial entry into the blackberry product line up with Blackberries "playbook" tablet (as playbook os 1.0) which was first introduced in September 2011. This article takes a look at some of the features in this new o/s

[WHY] features (unique, better)

  1. [USER INTERFACE] (UI)
    1. ] lock screen
      1. ] "swipe up" from the bottom of the screen to reveal your most recently used running applications in their active frames, (you dont need to press any physical buttons to power on the device)
      2. ] "swipe left" to reveal you home screen(s) with the apps grid
      3. ] "swipe down" from the top of the screen to shut down your phone
      4. * lock screen in video demo 4.2 is displaying the notifications panel which indicates the source and count of notifications, also displaying time and next calendar appt
      5. ] UPDATE 10.x - lock screen can be configured to display priority hub summary with count of messages by application  
    2. ] home screen(s)
      1. ] by default shows your "active frames"(see more below) are the home screen,
      2. ] an active frame displays for each of the applications that your device is currently running, you can view current info from each of these apps(weather,my stocks, reminders, )
      3. ] you can easily switch to the full screen app
      4. ] you can also continue on to disply your "app grid pages" of all the apps on the device
      5. ] "swipe left" to scroll thru your apps (horizontally)  -> ->, (like android)
      6. ] "tap" on the homescreen 'page dots' to choose which 'home screen page' to display (like android) 
      7. ] the hub is the the home screen, for all your communication needs
    3. ] active frames 
      1. ] contains your currently running 'minimized' apps ( similar to android's widgets or windows phones live tiles )
      2. ] apps can ADAPT(change what they do/display) when they are minimized ("what" they display is determined by each individual app)
      3. ] you can have up to 8 apps running on the home screen, 4 apps will be on the display first page, 4 more will be available by scrolling vertically down 1 more page * slightly different on different models(aka Passport)
      4. ] these "active frames become your home screen ( VS the app grid of app launch icons )

    4. ] HUB
      1. ] a universal inbox, unique to blackberry - your "hub inbox" can include all your communication "accounts" (example ] email work and ] personal email, ] messaging accounts (including bbm, ... ) and social accounts like ( linkedIn, facebook, twitter, ...) and FUTURE additonal applications from third party developers. It also integrates VOICE messages.
      2. ] hub also supports the native calendar application - displays your upcoming calendar appointments in your hub, you can "flow" into the "appointment details" or the "attendees" list and access additional details like recent social posts or your interactions with them (emails, messages) or ...
      3. ] hub is an open api - this means that third party application developers can target their apps content for the bb hub as well, what that means to you is that the "next big app" that everyone "has to have" may well target it its delivery notifications into the hub.
      4. ] priority hub - added in v 10.2 - enables users to optionally have a "prioritized subset" hub which contains only the priority messages from specified "priority" requisites, there are options to specify which criteria will be used to determine priority messages, ex
      5. ] instant actions - added in v 10.3 - enables users to take action on multiple items at the same time, ex by selecting multiple messages , then choosing an option from the instant actions menu( ex delete or archive or ...), all items
    5. ] true multi-tasking
      1. ] multiple apps are/can be always ON, always RUNNING, these apps not simply "task switched" like most other mobile operating systems today, but are running concurrently.
    6. ] multi-touch, 'gesture based' OS
      1. ] there is no physical 'home' button on the device like the iphone, you return to the 'home' screen (from anywhere) by 'swiping up' from the bottom bezel of the phone
      2. ] there is (x) primary gestures, that are used to control navigation on the device
      3. ] bb has 'on screen' buttons for ] phone ] search ] camera ]
    7. ] flow 
      1. ] hub -> email account -> email.messages -> email.message  -> message.attachment
      2. *] 1 thumb  NAVIGATION- app - actions menus are at the bottom of the screen
      3. ] application menus are located at the bottom of the screen, closest to your thumb, 
      4. ] the "3 dots" glyph OPENS the app's context menu for the app - menu options for the "app" that you are in

    8. ] peak
      1. ] peak is the ability to look into another application without leaving the application you are currently in. bb10 peak gives you the ability to peak forward and also to peak back. you can then launch the application that you are "peaking into" OR you can return to the application that your were previously working in.
      2. ] gesture "swipe up and right" - from inside any app and you can preview/peek at the "HUB" content without leaving the app your in, if you want to go into the hub continue right, if not - return down 
      3. ] gesture "swipe left" - peek back
    9. ] notifications
      1. ] pullout from the hub view OR the lockscreen
      2. ] swipe right from the left hand side of the screen their will be a notifications panel. This panel indicates any new activity notifications on the accounts that you have included in your hub
    10. ] keyboard(s) virtual,
      1. ] advanced predictive text engine, learns from you as you use it, see David Pogues NY Times article in the REVIEWs section as he explains his experience
      2. ] "swipe up" to insert a "predicted word" into your message
      3. ] "swipe down" to delete/remove an inserted word from your 'message'
      4. *] kb has frets, places the "predicted words" onto the various frets
      5. ] heat sensors below the keyboards virtual keys to detect "touch typing mistakes" and "re-position the keys" on the keyboard to more accurately reflect your typing mannerisms
