[WHAT]

  1. [2014-mm-dd] g+ Q on drawbacks?
    1. [QUESTION]
      1. ] considering purchase of passport, moving from Nexus5, question about drawbacks
    2. [ANSWERS]
      1. X] Just my attempt at irony/sarcasm/humour, IMO the nexus 5 is one of the best "bang for the buck" android phones out their, but its biggest drawbacks IIRC were the ] battery life, ] audio quality and i believe the camera was'nt all that great either. The passport on the other hand has been praised highly for its ] battery life ] audio quality and while the 13MP camera on the BB is not "the best" out there, it is pretty decent and it is the best that has ever been offered on a bb product.
      2. + ] As Frank pointed out the biggest drawbacks that many reviewers/users seem to point out is "getting used to the keyboard" because it is different, both in build and in functionality, then tradditional bb keyboards. If you used a BB keyboard phone before and thats what your looking to go back to, you may want to consider the upcoming (2014-12-17) "classic" model which has a more traditional bb kb, including the "classic toolbelt" buttons, that were not present on the Q10 series.
      3. +] NO CDMA - if your commited to a service provider still using CDMA networks( US, verizon, sprint )
      4. X] The other thing to take into consideration is how entrenched you are in the google ecosystem. While the passport does run many android apps well and does have the Amazon android app store installed to make it quick&easy to get more android apps. Androids apps that rely on Google Play Services, including many Google apps, (examples Google Hangouts, g+, Google Now, Google Talk) will not work out of the box. That doesn't mean that you cant use Google services like Gmail, Google Calendar, g+, etc, but it does mean that the user experience you have will be different then on an android device.
  2. [2014-mm-dd] g+ post by Matt Neithercott - does anyone actually want this?
    1. [COMMENT]
      1. I'm sure the keyboard is great... But imagine that thing in your pocket...
    2. [COMMENT]
      1.  I'll buy pants with bigger pockets, darnit.
    3. [COMMENT]
      1.  Everybody doesn't put their phone in their pocket. People wear beat clips, holsters, and women use purse's. You may use your pocket, but don't put everyone else in that same category.
    4. [COMMENT]
      1. If you want a blackberry 10 keyboard device that will fit in your pocket and that you can use 1 handed, check out their Q10  http://sospep.com/view/article?id=2118  ] I believe the passport is aimed at specific verticals, for example  medical professionals, where having as much info(charts, xrays, etc) on screen as possible and accessing/handling that info securely are the priorities. ] I don't think that this device is intended to have any mainstream consumer appeal, but people are talking about it, and if only the +BlackBerry marketing department could figure out a way to take advantage of that buzz ...
  3. [2014-mm-dd] cnet.com article by Roger Cheng - Editors Take - Fat, weird, but crackberry addicts might love it.
    1. [COMMENT] re: build quality of previous BB10 hardware
      1. ] >> One of the knocks on the original BB10 devices was the cheap, plastic feel to them
      2. ] I have never seen a blackberry z10, q10 or z30 that had a "cheap, plastic feel", perhaps your confusing them with devices from another manufacturer.
      3. ] Almost all of the reviews from the major tech blogs, note the build quality of the blackberry devices as one of their best features
    2. [COMMENT] re: 10.3
      1. ] >> running on BlackBerry 10.3, an upcoming version of its software. There weren't any noticeable differences on how it performed relative to the older devices
      2. ] I think that the BBRY os dev team would take great offence to that statement!
      3. ] They have made huge strides from the 10.0 release (not quite ready for prime time) to the upcoming 10.3 release (almost there).
      4. ] I understand that one may not be familiar with each os and its ongoing development if one does not use that os, but even reading through the change log for that os should provide one with a good idea of whats been happening.
    3. [COMMENT] re: BBRY marketing
      1. ] >> OK, I didn't exactly get my hands fully around the Passport -- the BlackBerry rep insisted on holding it at all times
      2. ] that sounds like strange behaviour coming from a product rep 'demoing' his product to you, gotta love Blackberry's marketing team, they could easily sell "ice cold beer" on a hot day in the dessert, maybe ?
    4. [COMMENT] reply: @nate650
      1. ] sure it was a pre-production device, but it just sounds odd to me that you would show somebody something and then not really show it to them.
      2. ] I am NOT a keyboard guy but that keyboard sounds REALLY interesting, a "physical keyboard" that has "touch" capabilities, that interacts with the touch screen to display the 4th row of keys, that displays the 4th row of keys "contextually" dependant on what your doing, that just sounds really interesting to me, that's what i want to hear more about.

[COMMENT - passport]

- i get that it's a pre production device but c'mon
- FORM FACTOR - we get it, its a big square device, it wont fit into all pockets, only those with monster hands will be able to use it 1 handed, lets move on
- i dont think that it's intended as a mainstream device, its a niche device for specialized verticals
