REVIEW: nascar app for windows 8

I am sure that because this app is "just new" and it is only version 1.00 that hopefully there is much more on the way from the team in the nascar app developer garage.

No problem to find the app in the windows store or to install it and run it on my system.

Once running i see that there appears to be 4 main categories of functionality that it is offering, These are NEWS, VIDEOS, SCHEDULE and STANDINGS

The news - This section looks nice but there is not really much to offer other than the "glossy magazine" style inteface to reading some of "yesterdays" news. It was a little disappointing to see that the app appears to be pulling the news stories from the nascar news archives section and doesn't present 'todays' news stories. I also didn't see any option to pull more news stories from nascars site should the 7 or so stories that are presented not be enough nascar news for you.

It includes the 2013 Schedule. - Nicely presented but thats it. At minimum I would think that it would be nice to have an option to pull those dates into my calendar app. Give me a little bit of "app" in my "app", not just a prettier web page.

It includes the 2012 Standings - Nicely presented but thats it. Click a driver on the list, nothing, Click a car #, more nothing. Teams are not even on the list. Its just a list of the drivers standings from 2012. Click the 2012 heading to go back and see last years standings, guess what ? your right, more nothing

The live tile for this app that appears on my windows start screen, display's the nascar logo. I have nothing against the nascar logo, buts its a very poor use of a live tile.

Their is no ability to pin additional content bits(favorite driver, upcoming events, standings, etc ) to my start screen.

i was ready to wrap up this review ....

my RATING: Dissapointed.(Black Flag) RECOMMENDATION: right-click nascar app, left-click uninstall

but i had 1 more tab to check out ...

VIDEO - 7 categories of videos to choose from, not including the "current" or "editors picks" content categories that are on the website but the idea is there and hopefully they will add the other categories as well ... IMO its a much nicer way to browse this video collection then just using the web browser.

Compare content ...

APP.video.categories = featured, in-race-highlights, race-rewind, final-laps, press-pass, sights&sounds, the preview show

SITE.video.categories = all of the above +++ latest, all access with algair, fantasy showdown, garage cam, green-white-checkered, hall-of-fame, inside-nascar, miss sprint cup, nascar preview, ++++

also noting that the video quality on my system doesnt appear to be great, that might just be something on my system but will check into that on my side

and 1 final note before I conclude, if your thinking its a "nascar" app and there should /might be some nationwide or truck series coverage here also, sorry, its over at the website too.

CONCLUSIONS:

PROs: The nascar app offers a "glossy magazine" style inteface to reading some of yesterdays news. It also has a very nice video browsing/viewing interface that accesses a portion of their online video clip catalog.

CONs: There is nothing unique as far as content or fuctionality in this app that I can't simply get from their website. The content that it does offer is somewhat dated and is limited in its scope. Their is no live tile, their is no additional pins, their is no app in this app.

my RATING: Black Flag = send this back to the developer garage and work on this hot rod some more, it needs more horsepower to get it up to speed!

my RECOMMENDATION: will review again in 30 days
