    12. ] more diverse portfolio on wearables, ] some hints at smartglasses
    13. ] is the loss of share inevitable, because of their dominance

    15. ] mobile division made 4.31 B in profits in a market where only 2 companies made any noteable profit
    16. ] it's less money than what made previously, thats all that Shareholders/Wall Street care about.

    5. ] first time the Canadian government has acknowledged chinese hacking, some apprehension about how its going to play out

    8. ] Canada already has a "frosty" relationship with Chinese gov., blocked some of their access to oilsands projects, they blocked canadian financial institutions(banks/insurance) access to their market

  6. [25:30][government] Verizon is planning to throttle or slow down the service of its unlimited data plan users starting in October  w/ Jon Brodkin @arsTechnica
    1. ] the FCC Chairman isn't happy about it. In a letter, Chairman Tom Wheeler calls the plan "disturbing" and "deeply troubling".
    2. ] what is verizon doing and why is Wheeler troubled when others are also doing it?
    3. ] a few years ago, Verizon started throttling 3G users, limited it to users with Unlimited plans and to when they connected to "congested towers"
    4. ] whats new is, they are now doing throttling with 4G users also
    5. ] every carrier has to do some throttling to keep networks operating effectively
    6. ] what verizon is doing, is because of customers with 'grandfathered' unlimited data plans,
    7. ] verizon wants to get these customers to move to new plans with limited data, where they will be able to charge users additional for over data limits
    8. ] thats the reason for Wheelers objection
    9. ] is part of the problem of the FCC's own making, vague interpretaion of terms like "reasonable network management"
    10. ] reasonable network management, doesnt apply to wireless carriers, rules for wireless carriers are really weak,
    11. ] what could the FCC do?
    12. ] could issue a stronger set of net neutrality rules
    13. ] other countries like South Korea have super fast wireless network, are they doing this(throttling) instead of building up their wireless infrastructure
    14. ] juggling systems instead of systems that perform like in other countries
    15. ] throtting is pretty universal when it comes to the heaviest data users on the most congested cell sites
    16. ] AT&T is doing the same thing

    1. ] Facebook and OkCupid have been in the news lately because we learned they’ve been doing experiments on users.
    2. ] Facebook changed some users’ News Feeds to be more negative to see if that would change what they did on Facebook.
    3. ] The OKCupid online dating site lied to some users about their compatibility with other users to see if that changed their relationships. Slate senior technology writer Will Oremus wrote a humor piece on the subject, where he quoted OKCupid co-founder Christian Rudder saying: “Guess what, everybody: If you use the Internet, you’re the subject of hundreds of experiments at any given time, on every site. That’s how websites work.”
    4. ] is it the norm, do all websites do this experimentation?
    5. ] most do experimentation of some sort, all the time, likely that most are NOT of this type, on a personal level
    6. ] example testing - A/B testing, ex different headlines - same story, OR changing styles site design, layouts to determine which creates a higher clickthrough rate for visitors
    7. ] A/B testing of headlines doesnt affect the relationships people have IRL
    8. ] thing is, we dont know which sites are doing or what they are doing
    9. ] we have to trust the sites we use
    10. ] this is a violation of trust, for some people
    11. ] if users dont like it
    12. ] you can vote with your feet and go elsewhere,
    13. ] BUT is where you go, doing the same thing?
    14. ] some services like facebook, which are ubiquitous
    15. ] people wont leave, but these types of incidents erode users trust
    16. ] could be harming themselves, they rely on the data that users feed into their system to sell ads,
    17. ] if users continue to lose trust, its 'possible' that they may feed less of their data into the system
    18. ] facebook is realizing it, OK Cupid maybe not so much
    19. ] example experiments from humour article - YELP experiment
    20. ] switch reviews and ratings from the worst sushi restaurants and best restaurants, see if people then try worst and give it a good rating
    21. ] example Yahoo mail - delete all user email
    22. ] see how people react to having no emails, are they happier or not?
    23. ] example busch could switch beer with fake beer and
    24. ] see how people react, do they still act drunk
