The gov has access to all the 'data' that they need, regardless of what they tell you on 'camera'.
The problem is NOT the 'data', the problem for .gov is that it's a political "hot potato" - call it the the "haves" VS the "have-nots".
The various levels of .gov could take action to correct the market, but they quite likely WILL NOT enact any meaningfull measures, b/c of .... the "haves".
The "haves" which include the homeowners/realtors/speculators/etc AND this very gov itself are more than happy to continue to watch this bubble grow as big it will get, as they are or they will be reaping wheelbarrows full of cash!!!
( ... YES, I called it a bubble and YES, i believe there will be a correction AND NO I don't want to hear your arguements about why it's not a bubble, IANAE and you could be right, but so could I, so lets just agree to disagree and move on ... )
The "have nots" which now includes pretty much every "prospective homeowner" in Vancouver proper (and stretching further beyond) are priced out of the market, vocal and growing increasingly frustrated (especially when "strategies" like this article covers are exposed) BUT alas they are not "organized" enough, nor would they be able to come to a "consensus" upon what "measures" to enact to attempt to address the problems.
Even if they were organized enough and could build a consensus of agreed upon actions to take, they would still have to push their agenda past the "haves" who likely have much deeper pockets and better connections.
It would be a tough battle to win, but hey, they brought the PST back to life after the HST was in place, so it's NOT an impossible battle, just quite unlikely that it will happen. Would you take that battle? not likely, so in the mean time what do you have?, Well, welcome to ...
