my summary notes

  1. [00:00] win 7 was a colossal success for msft!
    1. he says over 500 million licences sold,
      1. SIDE NOTE more recently(2012-10) Balmer cited 670 million copies also, Jensen BRINGs UP good point in that "colosall #" of licences SOLD it does NOT COUNT ALL the ILLEGAL copies that 'may be' in use
  2. [00:00] ?= is "familiarity" the best approach?
    1. ?
  3. then brings up some examples of "familiarity" VS "modern" and how modern "changed things"
    1. ex ps3 controller VS nintendo wii (changed things)
    2. traditional cellphone VS iphone (changed things)
    3. toyota familiar, toyota prius modern
    4. wordperfect 5.1(familar) vs word 1.0(modern)
    5. windows start button/menu is familiar ( design inception in 1992, implemented in 1995 (win95)
    6. start button+menu & taskbar & desktop & icons & explorer
    7. Designed for the "things we did with the PC in 92", maybe not for things that we do with the pc now.
  4. came up with 5 areas of focus for a "modern" windows
    1. Expectations = people, Web,  cloud
    2. Scenarios = read, watch, devices in your life
    3. Ineraction= touch, new postures
    4. Development = html5, css, js
    5. Visual design= digital, broadcast quality
  5. essentially now, people/users are booting their computer twice
    1. pc
    2. browser
  6. New postures,
    1. not just mouse and keyboard, 5 pointers on each hand,
  7. development
    1. New apps are built with html5, css and javascript(aka web technologies), they can take full advantage of the capablities of the PC, developers who can develop a website can develop a windows app, you dont have to learn new proprietary technologies,
  8. digital design
    1. authentical digital
  9. [24:00] win release PREVIEW video of "start screen" / "active tiles"- aka the "home" of windows
    1. "feels like a house made out of the internet" - david pierce - the verge
    2. "dont have to go into every app to get info out, its just there" jensen - msft
    3. tiles - PIN  - apps, programs,
    4. tiles - PIN ++  - people, books, webpages, stocks, albums, sports teams, weather,
  10. [26:00] demonstrates
    1. semantic zoom out - to move tiles around start screen
    2. native mult touch - - select a tile with 1 finger, pan screen(scrollHorizontal) with a second finger
    3. charms - "are the fundamental things windows is made of"
    4. share - from any app to any other app ?
      1. share ing = email, facebook, twitter ?g+, pinterest, stumbleupon, ? ...
      2. EX = news story, photo,
    5. side by side
      1. twitter timeline(side) + newsreader(main)
  11. [29:00] ...some EXAMPLE APPS
    1. ] newsreader by bing -
    2. ] usa today
  12. [31:00] the five design principles and what they meant to the windows team
    1. ] do more with less - aka "fierce reductionism"
    2. ] authentically digital -
    3. ] pride and craftsmanship
    4. ] fast and fluid
    5. ] win or lose as one
  13. [32:00] PRINCIPLE 1 - do more with less  - EXAMPLES
    1. ] Tiles = launcher , switcher, gadget, dashboard (all of these things ), all with one thing
    2. ] OLD = plug in or find another power source VS NEW plug in your PC
    3. ] settings - aka control panel - now headings only, no descriptions
    4. ] blue screen - OLD=verbose, NEW=minimalisty
  14. [37:00] PRINCIPLE 2 - authentically digital
    1. ] skeuo morphism - a design object in its digital realm, should look like its realworld counterpart, a clock should look like a clock,
      1. viewpoint - its gone too far, ex apple bookshelf, faux leather in find people, calendar, effects have gotten overblown
    2. ] w8 - using - glyphs ("easily recognizable", "way finding signs") & clean typography
    3. ] w8 apps - content is the king, NOT the chrome (menus, toolbars, ...)
    4. ] w8- apps - you get to the chrome, the same way in all apps
  15. [40:00] APPS that exemplify this ...
    1. ] usa today - newsreader
    2. ] world weather map -
    3. ] xbox video -
    4. ] my history digest - typography] weather - broadcast quality
  16. [47:00] PRINCIPLE 3 - pride and crafstmanship
    1. ] getting the little details perfect, ms created a special font for the word "start", so it would look perfect in all languages, sizes,
    2. ] when you pan your start screen tiles, the edges are going to line up with the start name
  17. [] EXAMPLE APP - cocktail flow
    1. ] broadcase quality digital experience
    2. ] underlying grid template for app developers to get consistency across apps
    3. ] caring about every, every, every, ... detail
    4. ] OOBE experience, blue flash example ...
    5. ] because we cared enough about sweating the smallest details
  18. [53:00] PRINCIPLE 4 fast and fluid
    1. ] a feeling, graceful, organic and human - 3 KEYS  speed and responsiveness, animations, touch language,
  19. [00:00] PRINCIPLE 5 win or lose as one
    1. ]
  20. [57:25] 7 gestures =
    1. ] press and hold = learn
    2. ] tap=primary action,
    3. ] slide=drag
    4. ] swipe=select
    5. ] swipe from edge = ui,
    6. ] pinch to zoom =
    7. ] rotate=rotate
