why windows 8 could will be a gamechanger for microsoft (MSFT)

First lets take a look at these FACTS ...

  1. msft owns the traditional desktop operating system market
    1. and the desktop os market is huge but sales are currently declining (for the first time in like ... ever)
    2. msft's percentage of this pie is NOT likely to change significantly in the year ahead, albeit the pie is shrinking
  2. msft has 0 presence in the tablet market.
    1. and the tablet market is growing rapidly  (forecasts for the year ahead are for upwards of 100 million units )
    2. even if they can grab a small peice of this pie it could be a big chunk of new business
  3. msft has minimal presence in the smartphone market
    1. the smartphone market is growing rapidly. ( forecasts for the year ahead are as optimistic as 1 B for Billion units )

  4. the largest majority of consumers(lets call them the "average consumer") who buys a desktop, laptop, tablet or a smarphone are NOT tech enthusiasts who revel in the minute details of how their operating systems function.
    1. they just want to turn the device on, get their email, look at their photos, work on their *documents, listen to their music, browse the web, do their google stuff, make their calls and maybe ... check out facebook

Now lets factor in 1 assumption

  1. lets assume, that for our "average consumer", it "might be" appealing to have 1 os interface, one(1) "how to - do computer stuff" and it looked the same and it worked the same on whatever computer they had, wether it be on their desktop or laptop pc, on their smartphone, on their tablet, maybe even on their computer at work
    1. assuming that this feature would be "appealing enough" to (x %) of average consumers that they would choose a ms os based tablet or a ms os based smartphone over a competing brand ...
    2. msft is ahead of the game, way ahead of the game.

and this is just the beginning of the story, because the msft ball  is just starting to roll, find out whats next ...

(cont'd) so lets go ahead and crunch some numbers ...

  1. lets assume that MSFT can capture even (10%) of the tablet market
    1.  10 % of 100 million is 10 million units
  2. lets assume that MSFT can increase their phone market share , to lets say even (5%)
    1. a harder number to pin down, but its likely that even a 1% share of that market is in the millions of units (lets say 5-10), so conservatively even a tiny fraction of this market could mean another 15 million new accounts
  3. so lets take our very conservative 25 million new customers
    1. yes i know they are going to lose some $$ from the tradditional desktop licences business, we will address that later (or not)
  4. lets point each and every one of them to our new app store
    1. where they can buy stuff from msft, 
  5. lets have all the software developers who want to sell windows 8 apps, go throught the "store" 
    1. where we can charge them a percentage of their total sales
  6. now lets also point them(all users) at our new music service
    1. where they can also buy stuff from msft,
  7. now lets also point them at our online storage service
    1. where they can buy services from msft, 
  8. almost forgot to mention, games, there kind of a big thing ...
    1. is there a way can we point them to our store, of course there is, lets do that
  9. now that we've touched upon our new customer base ...
    1. and the 'potentially huge NEW REVENUE STREAMS that could open up ... 
  10. BUT now let talk about making some REAL money, ....
    1. there a boatload of windows users out there, and i am talking a huge ship here, not some little sailboat
  11. the people running windows 7, windows vista, windows xp , we are talking HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS people here
    1. WHAT IF msft could get even a fraction of them to upgrade to the new windows 8 ...
  12. and then of course, they would be welcomed with open arms
    1. as they walked into the money generating doors of  ] store, ] skydrive, ] xbox live music, ] xbox live games, ] ...

    1. buy msft shares
