  1. [2015-07-dd] i recall reading an older post, something along the lines of "so you think you want to write javascript for a living || be a javascript developer?" by (someone_important in the js community > Hans Brough author, re posted by Nic Zakas ), OP asked about a number of fairly common things/tasks they you would do in normal day to day development in js
    1. ] i like this approach, it pointed out a number of 'fundamentals', not all of which i personally had a full grasp of at the time, obviously I wasnt qualified to write javascript for a living, even though I really wanted to ...
    2. ] need to know -  if you read my summary of the above article, i listed many of the 'need to know things (aka functions that you as a javascript developer should be able to do in/with javascript), according to the article, with some examples and explanation
  2. [2015-mm-dd] fast forward a couple of years,(actually, almost a decade now, how time flies when ... ), and 'a few things' have happened in the javascript world, since 2007, when Hans wrote that original article, those 'things' being ...
    1. ] new frameworks * approx 1 million+ -  a lot to learn for sure, dont worry, there is only a couple of dozen or so that are the most popular,
    2. ] new libraries * approx 1 million+ -  see above, except that there is many dozens that are popular, and just because a library isnt popular doenst mean that it wouldnt be beneficial to your project.
    3. ] mobile - who knew that the world would move almost entirely away from viewing the web on PC's to viewing it on their mobile devices. We are not quite there yet but the latest figures show that mobile is nearing 50% and trending up while PC is trending down.
    4. ] cloud - back in the day, when you were done coding your, you ftp'd the files up  to your chosen web host. Today you've got VPS, VM and a handful of cloud services to choose from
    5. ] node - use to be javascript was for the front end development( client side) of your web site only, then along came nodejs, a backend framework for developing js apps. Now you can write your entire site in javascript. node implements an asynch evented io model that makes it fast and the project gained momementum fast(wildfire).
    6. ] transpilers - because javascript is missing {a 'type' system}, someone at microsoft came up with one and wrote a language the compiles to javascript, because java developers dont want to learn javascript but do want to write javascript, someone at googel came up with a compiler that transpiles java code to javascript, because javascript is missing { ... }, someone, somewhere, came up with
    7. ] misc stuff worth mentioning - new versions of ] html5, ] css3, ] browsers are much improved and more standardized, ] oss/git/github, ] startup boom - dead - flash,
    8. ] es6 - a major new specification of the language that introduces many new features that are going to change the way you write javascript, things like ] classes, ] arrow functions ] modules, ] block scoping ] promises and much more.
