DRAFT - exploring my love hate relationship with google

the good, the bad and the ugly

[WHAT]

  1. ] I have a love hate relationship with this tech giant.
    1. ] in the begining it was all good. The savvy little search engine that could. It consistently delivered the best results, fast, and it was easy to use and came from the collection of nerds who's corporate mantra was "Do No Evil". How could we go wrong?
    2. ] googles search engine quickly moved people away from their yahoo directory browsing habits and over the years they continued to add service after service in addition to search. Some services, like gmail and google calendar are ubuqitous and nearly as widely adopted as their search engine. Some don't seem to resonate with users and will eventually end up in the google graveyard. Some do resonate and end up in the graveyard anyways
    3. ] now i have to admit that i was somewhat naive. I didn't realize that every search query that I typed into the google search box was being recorded and stored against my 'profile'.
  2. ] Lets start with the love side, the GOOD GOOGLE
    1. ] I think they make some great products and I am more then happy to use them "free" of charge,
    2. ] Hey, i get it, I know that free of charge doesn't necessarily come without a cost, they say that "if your not paying for the product, you are the product"
    3. ] being an optimist, let look closer at the good side of google
    4. ] [2015-mm-dd] GOOD # # - a google employee tells you, the 10 things he wished he had know before he started
    5. ] [2015-mm-dd] GOOD # # - google investor - + google is the new gold, # 4206 google is the new msft, # peak google
  3. ] so, part of what i am trying to figure out is exactly what is the non dollar cost to me of using Googles services?
    1. ] giving up all/a lot of my data to google
    2. ] trusting my data with google
    3. ] perhaps the question shouldn't be one of love or hate, but perhaps it should be one of trust, how much do you trust google?
  4. ] why on earth would anyone hate on google?
    1. ] there seems to be some growing concerns being expressed around the company that started out as,
    2. ] Now, its a given, no matter how good you are, its likely that some people will hate on you. That hate likely grows exponentially with any success that you acheive.
    3. ] if you dont like that fact that googles free services are vacuuming up all of your data that they feel is relevant to themselves, the door is right there, nobody is forcing you(or me) to use them. It's not like there aren't any number of alternatives for any one of the services that google offers.
    4. ] now dont think, that you will be completely google free, even if you cease to use any of their services, have you ever sent email anyone with a gmail address, visited a website with ads on it or one that used google analytics tools(many do)
  5. ] OK then, are these some reasons to hate on google, or at least ask the question, is google evil?

    2. [2015-01-22] UGLY - Zoe Keating VS youtube
